Interior

At the dedication for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on June 12, 1913, it was declared one of the finest buildings in the western part of the state. Bishop Hennessy told the congregation at the dedication mass and ceremony “that they had erected one of the grandest tributes of gratitude and faith in the west”

Many of the church’s interior furnishings were donated by organizations and individual families. The pews, statues, stations of the cross baptismal font, Christmas crib, and many of the fixtures were installed at the time of the completion of the church building. The heating system and pipe organ came a year later. Among the outstanding features of the church are the stained glass windows which were added in 1916. the names of the contributors for these windows are inscribed at the bottom of each window. These remarkable windows were handcrafted by an artist, who worked for .07 an hour, at the Emil Frei studios in Munich, Germany or St. Louis, Missouri. They were installed by the Emil Frei craftsmen from St. Louis.

In 1918, the high altar with its canopy, and the two side altars were installed. The high altar from the second church had been used until this time It was given to St. Nicholas Church in Kinsley, Ks.

Unlike many churches in the Diocese of Dodge City, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was not stripped of its statuary and ornamentation after the Second Vatical Council in 1963. It was decided that it would be wrong to remove the high altar canopy side altars and Statues from the monument that our ancestors had built.
